58th Annual Estate Planning Seminar Scholarships

On October 21 and 22, the Estate Planning Council of Seattle and the Washington State Bar Association will sponsor the 58th Annual Estate Planning Seminar. This is the second largest estate planning seminar in the country, with over 1,000 in attendance each year. I strongly encourage those of you interested in a career as an estate planner to attend this conference. It is a great opportunity to network with potential employers and the substance of the program is top-notch.

The Washington State Bar Association is offering three "John Price Scholarships" to three students enrolled in the UW Graduate Program in Taxation. These scholarships, named after Professor John Price, a former Dean of the School of Law and a world-renowned estate planner, offer complimentary admission to the conference together with a complimentary set of course materials for the entire program. Lunch is not included with these scholarships.

If you would like to be considered for one of the John Price Scholarships, please send Heather an email (hla3 (at) uw.edu) as soon as possible. If more than three students indicate interest prior to 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday, October 8, there will be a lottery to award the scholarships. Winners of any such lottery will be notified on Wednesday, October 9.

ABA Section of Taxation: Law Student Tax Challenge

The ABA describes the Law Student Tax Challenge as an opportunity for “two-person teams of students to solve a cutting-edge and complex business problem that might arise in everyday tax practice.”  If you are interested in this exciting opportunity, please speak with Professor Schumacher.  Course credit is available for participation in this contest.  The tax program has sent a team to finals as recently as 2008.  While the problem for 2013 will not be released until September 6, you can find more information about the challenge at http://www.americanbar.org/groups/taxation/awards/law_student_tax_challenge.html.

Deloitte Info Session - Monday, September 30, 2013

The Deloitte info session will take place on Monday, September 30 at 12:30 PM in Room 115B-C. This is a wonderful opportunity to talk with some of our alumni about the types of opportunities that exist for tax attorneys at accounting firms. Often, students who have no interest in accounting firms do after attending the info sessions, so I encourage you to attend, even if you don't think that you want to work for an accounting firm.

Please RSVP via Symplicity so that I know how much pizza to order.
